REUTERS: NY Fed's Williams says tapering of asset purchases may soon be warranted

"It is clear there has been “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goal for inflation and there has also been “very good progress” toward maximum employment, Williams said in remarks delivered during a virtual event organized by the Economic Club of New York. He was referring to the threshold policymakers set for reducing the central bank’s bond purchases from the current pace of $120 billion a month."

FINANCIAL TIMES: Top Fed official signals economy is strong enough for taper to begin

A senior official at the Federal Reserve signalled the US economy is strong enough for the central bank to begin reducing its massive bond-buying programme, but urged a “patient” approach to raising interest rates.

John Williams, president of the New York Fed, acknowledged the improving economic outlook and set the stage for the Fed to scale back its $120bn-a-month asset purchase programme this year.

"Assuming the economic conditions support the beginning of a taper soon, then there is a way to do this that I think would not disrupt markets at all and be relatively smooth and be done by the middle of next year," Williams told reporters after speaking during a virtual event organized by the Economic Club of New York. "But that's not been decided by the committee."
